I've concluded that my design is entirely utilitarian, there is no sculpture etc, and I won't pay to apply for a patent. In this case, I'm still not fully understanding--is my CAD drawing copyrightable? Or, since it represents the digital analogue of the physical object, is it also entirely utilitarian? Trying to determine why Hackspace Magazine, e.g., puts the CC BY NC license on their issues, which can contain lots of CAD drawings. Maybe just in case there happens to be copyrightable material in the issue?
